Barandán

Brandan the sailor, also called Brandano, Barandán or Borondón was a 6th-century Irish evangelist monk. That figure appears in the Irish, Breton and Galician traditions. In Galicia he is identified as a descendent of Breogán (a Galician mythical figure).

He was the protagonist of one of the most important Celtic medieval journey tales. He appears in the Navigatio Sancti Brandani, a text written between the 10th and the 11th century.

After a long trip he put in at some unknown islands. Some people think it was Newfoundland, but others identify them with the Caribbean islands or the Canaries. The legend says that the monks celebrated a resurrection mass on an island, which turned out to be the back of a whale, giving origin to the legend of the Atlantic wandering island.
